LINCOLN, Neb. — A Nebraska teacher left $530,000 to the public school system where she worked 25 years with instructions that the money should help special needs students.
Patricia Campbell, known as “Miss Pat,” taught at elementary schools at Lincoln Public Schools for 25 years, the Lincoln Journal Star reported.
Campbell died Jan. 9, 2020 at 90. In her will she designated $530,000 to the Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools to be used to help students with special needs.
The school system said recently the money will help expand Independence Academy, a program that teaches life skills to students with special needs aged 18 to 21.
The money will help to enlarge the space in order to accommodate 20 students, twice as many as it can currently accept. Classrooms will be added, appliances will be updated and bathrooms will be expanded. Money will also be set aside for future renovations and maintenance.
