The officer found a motorcyclist, later identified as McConnell, lying unconscious in a nearby median.
He was transported to an area hospital, where he died.
A preliminary investigation found that the motorcycle went into the grass median before returning to the road.
McConnell lost control, causing the motorcycle to return to the median.
At that point, McConnell was thrown from the motorcycle.
He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, according to police.
The crash remains under investigation.
