On this date in 1983 at Chicago’s Comiskey Park, The Police began their trek through North American, promoting their new album Synchronicity.

The week before the tour commenced the album was released and the day after they played that first show in Chicago, the Synchronicity became the number one album on Billboard Album Chart. It would hold the spot for 17 weeks, unseating Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

Four singles from the album hit the Billboard Top 40 in the summer of 1983 and early 1984, including “Every Breath You Take,” “King of Pain,” “Synchronicity ll,” and “Wrapped Around Your Finger.”
