September 2nd, 1995, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame opens in Cleveland. They do it with a concert. Just some of the performers, Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, Aretha Franklin, Little Richard, John Fogerty, John Mellencamp, Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen. There’s also the Allman Brothers Band, the Kinks, and I could go on and on and on listing performers, but I think you get the idea.
Today in 1988 at Wembley Stadium in London, they kick off the Amnesty International Human Rights Now Tour. The performance for this show, Youssou N’Dour, Peter Gabriel, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, and Tracy Chapman. It’s just 20 days this tour, but by the time it’s done, it ends up being the last time that Springsteen plays with the E Street Band until 1999.
And on this day in 1982, Fleetwood Mac kick off their Mirage tour in Atlanta. They do it with an opening act of Men at Work. Now this is a band, got a new album out, it’s doing very well on the charts, and it does so well that by the time this tour is over, Men at Work are headlining their own tour.
