Today on Rock, August 11th, 2011, a sad day. We lose singer from Warren, Jani Lane, at only 47 years old. He’d been struggling for a long time with alcohol and drug addiction and finally lost his battle.
Today in 1987, Rolling Stone magazine declares The Beatles, “Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” to be the greatest album in the last 20 years. Certainly a good argument for this. I mean, The Beatles technically did quite an amazing album. They recorded this at Abbey Road Studios with two four-track machines. That’s unheard of, even though in those days they could have used eight-track machines. But they did this. They had orchestral arrangements. And this is where Paul McCartney really steps out and starts to be more of the leader in The Beatles, having written more than half the songs on the album. And even if you just look at the artwork from the album, the album cover itself, certainly iconic. And a lot of guests who show up on the album cover, from Bob Dylan to Marlon Brando, Marilyn Monroe, WC Fields, just to name a few.
Also, a couple of rock birthdays on today’s calendar. Born in San Antonio, Texas, guitarist Charlie Sexton and born in England, Joe Jackson.
