August 21st, 1966, The Beatles are playing at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. Kind of a rainy night, and they play under a tarp. And it really isn’t much fun at all. And it’s one of the shows that leads them to the decision to give up touring and strictly stick to recording in the studio.
Also today in 1966, the Doors are playing at the Whiskey A Go Go. Jim Morrison, he’s a no-show for the first set. So the band goes out and finds him in between the first and second set. They bring him back. He’s tripping on acid. And in that second set, they do their song, “The End.” And that’s when Jim totally improvises the whole Oedipal part of the song, which they later record.
And then we take a look at the calendar. Got a few rock birthdays on it. Born Today, drummer from Journey, Steve Smith. Punk rock warlord, guitarist, and founding member of the Clash, the one and only John Graham Mellor, better known as Joe Strummer, and also celebrating a birthday today, Glenn Hughes.
