Martika “Toy Soldiers” soars to the top 31 years ago today

Did you know she has a connection to Dayton?

31 years ago today singer-songwriter Martika hit the top of the Billboard charts with her song “Toy Soldiers.” She was number one for two weeks in the summer of 1989.

Two other songs from her self-titled debut album also charted in the top 25, including “More Than You Know,” and “I Feel the Earth Move.” She followed up that album with another in 1991, Martika’s Kitchen, which gave her a second top 10 hit, with “Love...Thy Will Be Done.” She then stepped away from music industry for several years.

In 2003, she was back recording music with her husband, musician Michael Mozart, as part of the band Oppera. The band released two albums and did a co-headlining tour with Pat Benatar and her husband Neil Giraldo.

In a 2016 interview with Australia’s Today Extra, she talked about her career and touring as an 80s act. What might surprise you, is when this interview was conducted, she was living with her husband, in Dayton, Ohio. No word on where she makes her residence today.
