CHICAGO — Chicago White Sox manager Tony La Russa will not return for the rest of the 2022 season, the team announced Saturday.
La Russa, 77, the oldest manager in MLB this year who was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014, was advised by his doctors not to return for the team’s final 11 games, the Chicago Tribune reported.
“After undergoing additional testing and medical procedures over the past week, doctors for Tony La Russa have directed him to not return as manager of the Chicago White Sox for the remainder of the 2022 season,” the team said in a statement.

Bench coach Miguel Cairo will continue managing the squad until the end of the season, the team said.
La Russa has managed the White Sox, Oakland Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals over a 35-year career, according to Baseball-Reference.com. He has a 2,897-2509-4 record and has won three World Series titles.
It is unclear whether La Russa, who turns 78 on Oct. 4, will manage the White Sox in 2023, ESPN reported. He has been inactive since Aug. 30, according to the Tribune.
La Russa came out of retirement last year to rejoin Chicago, the team he originally managed from 1979 to 1986. He led the White Sox to the playoffs and has one year remaining on his contract, ESPN reported.
La Russa attended a ceremony for former pitcher Dave Stewart on Sept. 11 in Oakland, California, according to the Tribune.
“Health ain’t nothing to mess with,” La Russa told The Associated Press before the event. “I got checked in Chicago and the reason I flew to Arizona is because that’s been the place since the ‘90s I’ve had physicals. They addressed it, they fixed it, now it’s just a question of regaining strength. Don’t mess with health.”
