Royal family shares rare photos of Prince Philip

As the United Kingdom prepares for Saturday’s funeral of Prince Philip, members of the royal family took time to share fond memories in photographs of the Duke of Edinburgh with his great-grandchildren.

Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, died on Friday at the age of 99.

Funeral services for Prince Philip will be limited to the royal family because of COVID-19. That includes Prince Harry, who is making the trip from the United States. Harry has already arrived in London for the weekend, E! Online reported.

On Wednesday, the official Instagram account of the royal family shared a never-before-seen photo of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip posing with seven of their great-grandchildren. Philip and Queen Elizabeth have four children -- Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward -- eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The image was taken by Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, Harper’s Bazaar reported. The photo, snapped in 2018, features the royal couple with the three children of Catherine and Prince William -- Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis -- as well as Lena Tindall, Mia Tindall, Savannah Phillips and Isla Phillips.

“The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh surrounded by seven of their great-grandchildren at Balmoral Castle in 2018,” the post’s caption said.

On Wednesday, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge shared a photo from their own Instagram account. The shot was from 2015, taken at Balmoral Castle, E! Online reported.

“Today we share, along with Members of @theroyalfamily, photographs of The Duke of Edinburgh,” the account stated. “Remembering him as a father, grandfather and great-grandfather.”

Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, added a pair of photos on Twitter as the prince remembered his father.

“Remembering the Duke of Edinburgh as a much-loved father and father-in-Law,” the caption read.
