Austin Paul Harnish, 24, of Chesterton, was arrested Saturday and charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, according to Porter County online booking records.

According to a police report, Harnish was found to be nearly 2 1/2 times above the legal limit for drinking and driving, the Northwest Indiana Times reported.

According to the report, a Portage police officer approached the vehicle shortly before 2 a.m. and found the car still running in reverse gear with the windows steamed up on the inside, the newspaper reported.

Harnish was allegedly reclined in the driver’s seat and appeared to wake up when the officer tapped on the window, according to an incident report.

“What brings you to the center of this cornfield?” the officer asked, according to the report.

“I tried to turn,” Harnish allegedly answered.

Police said Harish was found to have a blood-alcohol level of 0.196, which exceeds the legal limit of .08, the Times reported.
