Johnson’s death on Monday at his home was announced on his social media accounts on Wednesday on behalf of his family, The Associated Press reported.

Johnson’s cause of death was not released, USA Today reported.

Johnson had been born John Wilkinson in 1947 and was raised on Canvey Island in the River Thames estuary. He went to Newcastle University, studying Anglo-Saxon literature and was a schoolteacher before he formed Dr. Feelgood with local friends, playing prog rock, blues and R&B.

Johnson left the band in 1977 after clashing with lead singer Lee Brilleaux.

Later, Johnson said the band would have made its members multimillionaires if they had followed their managers’ instructions.

Johnson was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. He decided against chemotherapy treatment and instead went on a final tour, recording his final album with The Who’s Roger Daltrey called “Going Back Home.”

Eventually, a fan of Johnson’s who happened to be a cancer specialist offered to help and removed a large 6.6-pound tumor. Johnson declared himself cancer-free and released another album, still performing until last month, the AP reported.

His family thanked the doctors who gave the artist “the extra years.”

In his later life, his steely stare earned him the role of Ser Ilyn Payne, a silent executioner, in the HBO series “Game of Thrones,” the AP reported.

He said it was his first time acting and that it was easy, The Washington Post reported.

Johnson is survived by his two sons and a grandson, the AP reported.
