Coronavirus: Cardinals-Brewers weekend games postponed after more positive tests

MILWAUKEE — More positive coronavirus test resulted in more negative news for Major League Baseball.

Update 8:35 p.m. EDT Aug. 1: Weekend games between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Milwaukee Brewers were postponed after one player and several members of the Cardinals’ staff tested positive for COVID-19, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

“It’s a waiting game,” Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns told the newspaper before the doubleheader was postponed. “We understand that Major League Baseball needs as much information as possible before making decisions about canceling games.

“We’re prepared to play each and every single day until we’re told otherwise and that’s the way we’re going to approach it.”

Original report: Saturday’s game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Milwaukee Brewers was postponed after one player and several members of the Cardinals’ staff tested positive, ESPN reported.

It was the second straight day that the Brewers’ 2020 home opener had been canceled because of COVID-19 tests by the Cardinals, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The teams are still scheduled to play a makeup doubleheader Sunday afternoon, the newspaper reported. That twin bill is pending further testing results.

The doubleheader will be the first of seven-inning games under an agreement announced by MLB on Friday, ESPN reported.

“After two Cardinals players tested positive, the entire team was tested in Milwaukee (Friday) using a rapid COVID-19 test and saliva samples also were sent to an MLB laboratory,” MLB said in a statement. “The rapid tests indicated that one additional Cardinals player and multiple staff members may be positive. The results from the MLB PCR saliva tests will not be available until later in the day.

“Based on the results of the rapid tests conducted in Milwaukee, tonight’s scheduled game between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Cardinals at Miller Park has been postponed. We will provide additional updates as information becomes available.”

The Cardinals’ results were the first positive tests for baseball outside of the East Coast since the regular season began last week, ESPN reported.

On Saturday, the Cardinals were informed of four additional positive tests among their 58-person traveling party, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. The team has had six positive test results since arriving in Milwaukee on Thursday, the newspaper reported. Three of them were by players, who have not been identified.

The Brewers have been idle since Wednesday night in Pittsburgh.

MLB announced the Philadelphia Phillies will play Monday against the Yankees in New York, while the Miami Marlins resume play Tuesday against the Orioles in Baltimore.

“MLB will continue to follow a conservative approach in addressing positive test results because the health and safety of our players, employees and the public at large is paramount,” MLB said in its statement. “We are in daily contact with the Players Association, public health officials, and our own medical experts in order to make decisions that will best protect individuals from being exposed to COVID-19. We will continue to provide further scheduling updates as necessary.”
