The title may not mean much for people who are not fans of comic books but it was the Superman debut issue, published in 1938.

The sale was brokered by Vincent Zurzolo of ComicConnect.com, an online auction and consignment company.

The comic was an origin story for Superman about how he came to Earth and became the Man of Steel and his alter ego Clark Kent.

This issue had previously sold for just over $3.2 million in 2018, the AP reported.

Only about 100 copies of Action Comics #1 remain out of the hundreds of thousands of copies originally printed.

This version is one of the best-condition issues known to exist, Zurzolo said.

Last month a rare prototype cover for Action Comics No. 1 was listed for auction, Barrons reported.

It is one of only three known to exist. It sold on Heritage Auctions for $204,000 on April 1.

The cover, known as an ashcan, had been used to blanket the cover of an issue, blocking the title and art from competitors when a company would trademark titles and logos that were planned to be published. It was meant to be tossed away.

One copy of the rare ashcan art is in the DC Comics’ vault and the other had been sold for $50,000 more than a decade ago.
