100-year-old WWII veteran celebrates birthday with party for first time

CHEVIOT, Ohio — A 100-year-old World War II veteran celebrated his birthday with a party for the first time in his life.

Elmer Kruse had never had a birthday party because of his religion. However, he decided turning 100 was different.

“He told our receptionist, he said he’s never really celebrated birthdays, but he thinks this one might be a little different,” Sandy Campbell, administrator at Terrace View Gardens, told WXIX. “It’s a little bit different during the COVID time. We’d love to have a big bash for him but we’re doing everything we can to be safe.”

The celebration was socially distant but there was still cake and balloons.

“I feel pretty good,” Kruse said.

Kruse’s advice is to enjoy each moment.

“I don’t know why I’m 100,” he stated. “I was born 100 years ago that’s why... And I keep plugging along.”
