Syracuse misspells last name on jersey of coach Jim Boeheim's son

This is one name that should never be misspelled on a Syracuse University basketball jersey.

Boeheim.

Jim Boeheim is in his 43rd season as coach of the Orange. With more than 1,029 victories -- along with five Final Four appearances, and a national title in 2003 -- Boeheim has earned legendary status.

But when Boeheim’s son Buddy played in the 2K Classic at Madison Square Garden against the University of Connecticut on Thursday, the freshman wore a jersey that spelled his last name “Boheim,” the Syracuse Post-Standard reported.

The Orange were red-faced.

The younger Boeheim, at 6-feet, 5 inches, scored a point and had an assist in Syracuse’s 86-73 loss to the Huskies.

With his name properly spelled during Friday’s game against Oregon, Buddy Boeheim did better, scoring three points. But it was not enough, as the Orange (2-2) lost 80-65, spoiling Jim Boeheim’s 74th birthday, which is Saturday.

WATCH: College basketball player apparently elbows opponent's face, gets barred from campus

A basketball player for Fitchburg State University in Massachusetts has been indefinitely suspended from the team and barred from campus for apparently throwing an elbow into an opponent's face

>> Watch the news report here

The broadcast of the NCAA Division III basketball game posted to Fitchburg's website appears to show number 23, listed on the roster as Kewan Platt of Charlestown, throwing an elbow into the face of another player late in the game.

With Fitchburg State trailing Nichols College 73-63, freshman guard Nate Tenaglia of Tewksbury launches a three on a breakaway. As Tenaglia returns to the ground, Platt glances over his shoulder before apparently throwing an elbow right into the guard's face

>> Watch the moment here

Tenaglia hits the ground hard and remains there momentarily before hopping up as the referees huddle.

"Clearly shows the kid already let the shot go and then gets hit," Fitchburg State junior Prince Addo said. "I don’t even know what to say; I’m just speechless."

After a short stoppage, the refs decide to toss Platt from the game, assessing a flagrant foul.

In a statement, Nichols College Athletics Director Chris Colvin said the team is glad Tenaglia was not hurt.

“We’re very happy that the Nichols College student-athlete involved in the incident, Nate Tenaglia, was unharmed and able to finish the contest. We are proud of the way our student-athletes handled the incident and that they did not allow it to escalate. This matter is in the hands of the authorities and the Fitchburg State administration. We trust that they will handle it appropriately," Colvin said.

One Twitter user pointed out that Platt appears to have been frustrated by a no-call at the other end.

"I feel it could’ve been a little feud like back and forth," Fitchburg State junior Eric Patel said.

The Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference released a statement Wednesday afternoon, saying the organization is considering further sanctions against Fitchburg State University.

"It doesn't show a good side of the school," Fitchburg State student Eric Patel said Wednesday afternoon. "It kind of ruins the school's reputation. Other than that, it is just unsportsmanlike."

The conference also said Platt's previous player of the week award had been vacated.

"His behavior goes against the MASCAC’s mission, which includes good sportsmanship," the conference said on Twitter

WFXT reported that Fitchburg State University police are investigating.

Trump takes shot at LeBron James on Twitter

Update Aug. 4, 2018 11:52 p.m. EDT: Referenced in President Donald Trump’s tweet denigrating Lebron James, Michael Jordan is showing support for James.

“I support LJ,” Jordan’s spokesperson told Yahoo Sports. “He’s doing an amazing job for his community.”

Update Aug. 4, 2018 3:52 p.m. EDT: First lady Melania Trump issued a statement in support of LeBron James Saturday, in response to President Trump’s late-night tweet attacking the basketball star.

The statement regarding President Donald Trump’s late-night tweets about James was prompted on social media, as the hashtag #BeBest trended on social media -- referring to the First Lady’s anti-cyber bullying campaign, according to the Washington Post.

In the statement, Melania Trump said James is “working to do good things” and she would be open to visiting James’ new I Promise School in Akron, Ohio.

Below is the full statement from Stephanie Grisham, Melania Trump's spokesperson, from CNBC:

“It looks like LeBron James is working to do good things on behalf of our next generation and just as she always has, the First Lady encourages everyone to have an open dialogue about issues facing children today. As you know, Mrs. Trump has traveled the country and world talking to children about their well-being, healthy living, and the importance of responsible online behavior with her Be Best initiative. Her platform centers around visiting organizations, hospitals and schools, and she would be open to visiting the I Promise School in Akron.”

Referencing an interview CNN’s Don Lemon did with James about the I Promise School for at-risk students, the president tweeted that James “was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon.”

“He made LeBron look smart, which isn’t easy to do. I like Mike!” Trump tweeted, making a reference to NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan.

Lemon did the interview with James on Monday, when the NBA all-star launched the elementary school in his hometown of Akron, Ohio.

“Sports has never been something that divides people," James said to Lemon. "It's always been something that brings someone together."

However, James said he believed Trump was “using sports to kind of divide us.” Lemon asked James what he would say to the president if he was sitting in front of him.

“I wouldn’t sit across from him,” James said. “I’d sit across from Barack (Obama), though.”

The ball has been in James’ court before. In September he called Trump a “bum” for rescinding his White House invitation to the NBA champion Golden State Warriors.

"Going to the White House was a great honor until you showed up!" James tweeted at the time.

James had not responded to Trump’s tweet as of early Saturday.

Here are the latest updates:

Update 1:34 a.m. EDT July 2: Dan Gilbert, chairman of the Cleveland Cavaliers, released the following statement about the deal early Monday:

"We will always remember the evening of June 19, 2016 as the Cleveland Cavaliers, led by LeBron James, ended the 52-year drought delivering the long elusive championship that many thought they would never see ... A championship that united generations of Clevelanders, both living and passed.

"Virtually anyone with roots in Northeast Ohio paused and felt the memories of the past and the utter joy that the burden of the so-called ‘curse’ was finally a thing of the past. Cleveland, Ohio was the home of a championship team for the first time since 1964. Words do not express the meaning and the feeling this accomplishment brought to the people of Northeast Ohio.

"None of this would have happened if LeBron James did not agree to come back home and lead the Cavaliers to the promised land. The entire Cavaliers franchise thanks LeBron for that precious moment and for all of the excitement he delivered as he led our team to four straight NBA Finals appearances.

"LeBron is a family man, first. We wish his kids, his wife Savannah, his mother Gloria, and LeBron himself nothing but the best in the years and decades ahead. LeBron’s connection to Akron, Cleveland and all of Northeast Ohio will most certainly endure as his commitment to the region and his support of many important causes has been impactful to so many kids and families.

"LeBron, you came home and delivered the ultimate goal. Nothing but appreciation and gratitude for everything you put into every moment you spent in a Cavaliers uniform. We look forward to the retirement of the famous #23 Cavs jersey one day down the line ..."

James’ decision to decline the option for 2018-19 was anticipated by many, especially after Cleveland’s defeat to the Golden State Warriors in the 2018 NBA Championship game.

Sources tell ESPN that Cleveland can offer James a better deal than any other team, with a five-year contract worth over $200 million.

Any other team can offer up to a four-year deal worth $152 million.

If James re-signs with Cleveland, he would earn $35.4 million in the 2018-19 season and would jump to $32.2 million in the option year.

He would also have the opportunity to explore free agency again in the summer of 2019.

James is also rumored to be considering the Los Angeles Lakers, ESPN reports.

James has some roots on the West Coast -- he owns a film production company and two homes in the Los Angeles area.

The odds that the Akron, Ohio, native will stay with Cleveland are tough.

The Cavaliers trail the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals 3-0, a lead that has never been overcome in the NBA.

During this season’s playoffs, James accounted for nearly a third of his team’s box-score statistics: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocked shots.

No player has contributed a higher share of his team’s playoff output.

The Akron native has a strong family base and runs a nonprofit organization called The LeBron James Family Foundation, which helps needy children in his hometown area.

Those ties may be enough to resist the opportunity to switch teams, but James’ numbers show he may be ready to move on.

He has been named the NBA's Most Valuable Player four times (2009, 2010, 2012, 2013) and has been to the NBA All-Star Game every year since 2005.

Nicknamed “King James,” James has been named the NBA Finals MVP three times, in 2012, 2013 and 2016.

He is the youngest player in NBA history to reach 30,000 career points.

As of June 2017 LeBron James’ net worth is $86 million, according to Forbes magazine.
