Rap trio Migos to receive ASCAP Vanguard Award

The streaming juggernauts Migos will receive the ASCAP Vanguard Award for their successful year in music.

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers said on Friday the trio of Quavo, Offset and Takeoff will earn the honor on June 21 in Los Angeles at its 31st annual Rhythm & Soul Music Awards.

Migos has dominated on the pop and rap charts, as well as streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, with songs like "Bad and Boujee," ''MotorSport," ''Stir Fry" and "Walk It Talk It." Their albums — last year's "Culture" and this year's "Culture II" — have reached platinum status and each hit the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

The Grammy-nominated Atlanta group will launch a tour with Drake next month.

The Gottis made sure the Travoltas were well fed for 'Gotti'

John Travolta and Kelly Preston didn't just receive the Gotti family's blessing to make a biopic about the late, infamous crime boss, they also were fed well, in true Italian style.

"Victoria Gotti made us a gorgeous spread one afternoon. It was awesome," recalled Travolta at the film's premiere Thursday.

"We've had quite a few meals. Quite a few great Italian meals," added Preston, who plays Gotti's wife, Victoria. "Victoria cooked us dinner, an amazing dinner in the same house that she and John lived in for many years, and the family was in and out and we spent all day long together and it was wonderful and then we've had other meals together. We had a great meal just when we landed here four or five days ago after the whole family had seen the film and that was incredible because they loved it. That was thrilling."

John Gotti, who died in prison in 2002, was head of the Gambino crime family and was convicted of murder and racketeering in 1992. "Gotti," which opens in the United States on Friday, has been in the works for years, with even Lindsay Lohan in the running to play the mobster's daughter in an early iteration. Travolta says the end result is worth it.

"Good things are worth waiting for and we were waiting for this and I think all the time we waited, we built up such a plethora of information and we found out how to design the film itself and I think we had time to work on the characters and be better at what we did, so I think it's a different film if we had done it then, than now and a better one."

The actor says one of the things viewers will take away from the film is how popular Gotti was.

"Unlike (John) Dillinger and (Al) Capone, Gotti was loved and I discovered why he was loved. He was actually like a local Robin Hood, he was a good will factor to many situations, whether it was putting businesses back in the black, and profit again or supporting families that weren't doing well, or neighborhood celebrations, so they loved him on a personal level," Travolta said.

The movie "Gotti" was sanctioned by the family, and some critics say it's too sympathetic and favorable toward a mafia boss.

Leslie Grantham, Dirty Den in 'EastEnders,' dies at 71

Actor Leslie Grantham, who became a British TV icon during the 1980s as arch-villain "Dirty" Den Watts on the soap opera "EastEnders," has died. He was 71.

Grantham's management company, Advocate Agency, said he died Friday but did not disclose the cause.

"EastEnders" first aired in 1985, chronicling life in the fictional working-class London neighborhood of Walford. Grantham's unscrupulous, adulterous character ran the Queen Vic pub with his wife, Angie, and their tempestuous relationship was central to many of the soap's most dramatic plots.

Half of Britain's population, some 30 million people, watched a 1986 Christmas episode in which Den handed his wife divorce papers with the words "Happy Christmas, Ange."

"Everyone thought Den was a lovable rogue," Grantham said later. "He wasn't evil, he was just Jack the lad."

Grantham left the show in 1989, when his character was apparently shot — only to be resurrected in 2003. The character was killed off again in 2005, shot by his second on-screen wife.

Born in London in 1947, Grantham joined the British Army as a teenager. While stationed in Germany, he was convicted in 1967 of killing a taxi driver during a robbery attempt. He began acting while serving a decade in prison.

Grantham had a few small television parts before auditioning for "EastEnders," which made him a star.

In 2004, he was ensnared in a tabloid scandal after taking part in webcam sex sessions with an undercover reporter from his "EastEnders" dressing room. He left the show soon afterward.

Outside "EastEnders," Grantham performed onstage, hosted a TV game show, wrote a children's novel and appeared in a television series in Bulgaria.

Grantham is survived by his ex-wife, Jane Laurie, and three sons. His representatives said there would be a private funeral for close friends and family.
